JC Penny Texas Longhorn Display

Well, its college football time of year again, and even up here in the Metroplex most people are avid University of Texas (Austin) fans. My dad was one of the biggest. One of the last conversations I had with him last November before he died was about the Longhorns. On November 3rd Texas had won against Oklahoma State in a close, high scoring game. Then, just two days before he passed away, they beat Texas Tech in an even higher scoring game- 59 to 43.

Growing up everything football was about the Longhorns. We watched the Dallas Cowboys each Sunday as well, but the highlight of the weekend was the Texas Longhorn games. To this day we still have a record (you read that correctly, a "record") of the Texas fight song along with several other songs by the band and some commentary from announcers. If memory serves me correctly, I believe its from the late 60's, maybe early 70's.

My mother tells a story from when I was about six years old and they invited the preacher over for Sunday lunch. It was decided I would say the prayer, and so I did. But instead of an "Amen" at the end, the preacher got to hear, "Hookem' Horns!". Luckily he thought it was cute- but my mother was not so amused.....

This display caught my attention as soon as we walked in to Penny's and brings back some wonderful memories.
