Texas Missions Around El Paso

There are only three missions in the El Paso area because of the shift in the banks of the Rio Grande River. Ysleta and Socorro Missions and The San Elizario presidio chapel remain today.

You can drive to all three in just over three hours time. Some times of the year there is a trolley that goes from mission to mission. The missions around El Paso are unique. They do not look like other missions of Texas. They were built to fit the area 's needs.

El Pasoans celebrate what they call Thanksgiving on April 30. They claim that was when the first Thanksgiving was held. They say that Don Juan de Onate led an expedition from Mexico in April 1598. The colonist had to bear many hardships such as hot desert heat with very little food or water. When they arrived safely , old Don Juan told everyone to put on their best clothes because they were going to feast and have Thanksgiving. This was the first Thanksgiving to El Pasoans.
