The same habitats of the Javelina are also home to flocks of Rio Grande turkeys.
The Rio Grande turkey, like most wild turkeys, has long, slim legs and spindle shaped body with a long tail. Its head is small and eyes protrude. The tom has a long beard hanging from its breast.
The wild turkey is not as heavy as the domestic turkey, but they can make a great meal and are hunted quite often.
Because of its habitat, the Rio Grande turkey is light to dark copper. It likes to live, feed, and reproduce in open areas. Because of climate change, it is nomadic, having summer and winter ranges.
The Rio Grande turkey has excellent vision in daylight but does not see well at night. It can run at a speed of 25 mph and fly at 55 mph. Its color and speed help protect it from predators, including man.
