Two Fences?

The fences behind Annie Lou and this 1967 Chevy Nova are quite common in neighborhoods around the USA. This particular set of fences in Burleson, Texas (USA) separate the property of an elemtarary school and private residences.

The school, wanting to mark its territory, puts up a short, chain link fence. The homeowners, wanting more privacy from the school traffic, places a tall privacy fence next to the school's fence.

The situation this causes in a nightmare. There is no way to effectively get between the two fences and kill the growing grass and weeds, without harming the grass on the other side of the fences.

In either case, whether it be to let the bugs rule or try to handle the grass, the side with the chain link fence is always left doing all of the work. The person with the privacy fence falls into the "out of sight, out of mind" mindset.

Housing Development

This is a brick wall that turns into a stone wall right at the entrance to a new housing development in The Colony, Texas (USA). Since this is not a gated community, it appears the wall is meant to be nothing more than for looks, as well as to give the residents some privacy from the busy street outside.

Dallas World Aquarium

The Dallas World Aquarium is a great place to spend the day with your family. The dozens upon dozens of exhibits are complemented by a wonderful rainforest setting. Included in the DWA is a bookstore, gift shop, and small deli.

The highlight of most anyone's visit will be the tunnel going underneath thousands of gallons of salt water. Get a panoramic view of fish, sharks, and more as you walk through or sit on the benches lining the tunnel.

Another highlight where crowds gathered was the cute penguins in the outside exhibit. Though it was exceptionally hot this year it was worth a little sweat to get a few pictures taken with the strange looking beasts.

Visit the DWA website today to find out more information and to view the live webcams!

The Empty Parking Lot

This fence and gate in Coppell restricts access to this large, empty parking lot. Maybe that is the reason it stays empty, even during the middle of the day?

One of the things I found interesting about this fence is the barbed wire running across the top. While the fence and gate would keep vehicle traffic out, the barbed wire is obviously meant to keep intruders from climbing over the fence. However (and unfortunately its hard to tell from this photograph), any regular sized individual could easily crawl under the fence and gain access to the other side. So I guess they are hoping that if someone does try to trespass, they will be afraid to climb over due to the barbed wire, and afraid to roll under because they don't want to get their clothes dirty.

Two Filipino Houses, with Fences

This picture was taken from Annie's grandma's front porch in Cabadbaran, Mindanao Island (Philippines).

The house to the left has a cinderblock wall with large swinging doors. The fence around the house to the right was made out of wood and appears to be as old as the house it surrounds.

Apartment Homes Fence

This is a fence at an apartment complex in northeast Texas. Its slightly rusted and could use some maintenance, but the bushes planted outside of it cause a distraction from the blemishes, especially for those passing on the outside of the fence.

I've occasionally wondered what went through the developers mind when this fence was raised. One one hand, the fence would be needed to block the view of the back of the shopping center. But on the other hand, the developer had to want to give visitors and residents a less obstructed view of the small field and creek running beside the property (yes, that is a creek between the fence and the building).

The shopping center looks quite new and well maintained, as well as has a better-than-average view from behind. So it seemed the developer thought it would be better to let people view the creek and see the back of the building, than to block them in and not let them see anything at all.
