In 1856 the U.S. Calvary placed an outpost in Camp Verde, where Texas Rangers had fought off Comanches.
Jefferson Davis, Secretary of War, chose this site to test using camels as pack animals.
There was a small degree of success but when Confederate troops took over the fort in 1865, most of the camels were allowed to wander off. The general store in Camp Verde has a camel theme in the store.
