Lost Texas Treasure

In 1816 Jean Laffite stole over 2 million dollars worth of silver from a Spanish ship in Matagorda Bay.

He sent his loot north to St. Louis by wagon. On the way north, Mexican troops overtook the wagon near Longview. The driver tried to save the silver by driving it into Lake Hendricks because the troops were gaining on it.

The wagon sank as it was in the middle of the lake. Most of the silver was never found. In 1928 a fisherman was reported finding 3 bars. As late as 1975 parts of the wagon have been found but no more silver.

Native American Reservations

The state of Texas has three Native American reservations, each located in a different area of the state.

The first, Alabama Coushatta Reservation, is in East Texas near Woodville. It has camping facilities on Lake Tombigbee. Prairie Dogs

In 1900, there was a settlement on the high plains of Texas that was 100 miles in one direction and 250 miles in the other. Over 400 million lived there in underground tunnels called "coteries" which consisted of several "towns".

The Prairie Dog is reddish brown, grayish or light brown, with a black stripe on its tail. It is a member of the squirrel family. It has strong rear legs so it can stand up. Its teeth are sharp so it can clip grass, flowers, and roots to eat. There is little need for water because the plants it eats have water stored in them.

The prairie Dog is a very social creature. They kiss and hug each other. They make barking sounds to communicate. They build their tunnels to protect them from predators. Hawks, snakes and man are their natural enemies.

The tunnels serve different needs. They are built at an angle so they will not fill with water during rainy seasons. The top room has an air pocket, in case of flooding. There is a room for bathing and even a storage room.

There are many Prairie Dog towns in Texas, but ranchers and farmers can kill them legally because of danger to livestock. As cute as they are, the ranchers and farmers consider them a nuisance.

Many towns have been put in park areas where the can live peacefully.
