The Caddo Lake Territory was once the Badlands of Texas.

Miriam Ferguson

When Miriam Ferguson was born in 1875 women did not have the right to vote. They were expected to marry, make a home and raise children.

As she was growing up in Bell County, Texas in an upper middle class neighborhood, it seemed to be her destiny. She attended Baylor Female College before marrying lawyer, James Ferguson.

She became First Lady of Texas when her husband was elected Governor. He was impeached two years later and banned from holding a state office again. Since he was not able to serve in office, he convinced Mariam to run for Governor. He ran her campaign even though he was against women in office.

It was during her first try for the Governor's seat that she became "Ma" Ferguson. Her platform was "Two Governors for the Price of One".

She was elected in 1924 as the first female Texas Governor. In 1930 she was defeated, but in 1932 because of the Great Depression and her promises of tax cuts she was elected to a second term.

"Ma" Ferguson lived in Austin after she gave up running for office. She died in 1961 at the age of 86.
